Surfacing

Lately I’ve been thinking of old friends and the fact I haven’t seen or talked to many of them in ages. I’ve been roaming the interior and am reminded every once in awhile it’s necessary to surface. It’s easy to become consumed with a new venture, a new vision, or a new way of living. The interior work asks us to live these more illusive layers where we can get caught in both delight and despair. All that mental, emotional, and spiritual work can be disorienting, that’s the time when we need to come to the surface for a breath of familiar air.

Whether we’re too high or too low the soul always craves balance. For me turning on some music and dancing around the kitchen while I cook brings me right back. Less thinking, more being in the body. The careful preparation of something that sustains the body is a great way to step back into the small comforts of the day for a much needed break from all that time spent with the unknown and uncomfortable.

So is reconnecting with friends that have gone to the side while we’ve been preoccupied with the fragile process of becoming. A trusted friend’s perspective lifts our struggling soul. Community and connection act just like a comfort food. We surface again and again, to ground ourselves in the gentle reality and regular rhythms of the day. These sure footings help bring us back into alignment, a sort of cosmic chiropractic adjustment.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed with just one facet of our lives from time to time, but it’s important to remember that life has unlimited gifts to offer. If we are to accept the gifts that come our way we need to remain open and consciously court them, and for that we need a certain amount of equilibrium. This is the gift of resurfacing, we readjust and rebalance, we step back into the body and everyday experiences in order to ground ourselves before we dive deep again.

Touching base with familiar routines and close friends is the key to bringing our inner and outer worlds into greater harmony.
