Making Your Home Sacred

God is in the details. – unknown

Are you ever struck by the feeling you get when you walk into another’s home? People reveal the truth of themselves when inviting us into their home. Who they are is in every detail of their home and the way it feels. Is it warm and cozy with a fire going, or sleek and modern with the latest technology, perhaps it’s filled with rare books and pictures of distant relatives in ornate frames. How we choose to live infuses our own unique energies into our homes. I have some very good friends whose house I went over to for dinner and was struck by how sterile it felt. There was no homey feel to it, no welcoming vibe. They have a dog and a beautiful house, and they are very cool. But their house doesn’t feel like they really live in it. It’s more like a pit stop for them. They are busy, they travel, and I felt their absence from their own home. It was so odd it got me wondering about the importance of attending to the details of our life. How the all the little things make such a big difference.

I think to really inhabit a home takes time and energy. When we rented, I noticed it took almost a year before I felt our energy really permeated the place. I’d hang up all of the family pictures, put all my cherished or meaningful items up, burn candles and incense. In short, I’d put everything I was into that house in a conscious way. Just like anything else, the degree of intention we put into something is mirrored back to us, and this is the same for our surroundings. Our houses are the sacred places we live, love, grow, and dream in. It’s a place where we go to recover from the stress of the day, the chaos and noise. We do our sacred soul work in it, and heal and create our lives. But this has to be done consciously, only then does our home become a container for all of the dreams we have for our life. Only then does it become an anchor for our daily life.

It makes sense that the more we bring to our home the more the feeling of the home changes. The more warmth, depth, love we imbue in the home the more our home returns these gifts to us. It’s reciprocal, just like any other relationship. When we come home from a long, stressful day the peace of our home we’ve actively created, welcomes us back. After a long trip to come home is to completely relax, unwind, and feel more like our self. We bring our energy, hopes, desires, and dreams to our home like a question, and see if we can’t answer it together.

Just as the most beautiful, luxurious home can feel like a shell, or a weigh station, the smallest, humblest home can feel like a sanctuary. Here’s to creating your own sacred space you call home. I hope it cradles all of your dreams until they become a reality.
